Student Firefighter Program
Welcome to our Student Firefighter Program, which is designed to pave the way for college students aspiring to build a career in fire service. Our program offers an exceptional opportunity for students to gain practical experience while pursuing their academic endeavors.
Program Overview:
- Supervised Shifts: Students are assigned shifts under the supervision of Captains, allowing them to participate as integral members of the engine company.
- Responsibilities: Student firefighters are expected to respond to incidents alongside the team, ensuring hands-on experience and practical exposure to real-life situations.
- Training Commitment: Attendance at training sessions that align with their academic schedule is mandatory. This ensures that students acquire essential skills without interfering with their college curriculum.
- Certification: Within a year, participants are required to complete a task book for NFPA Firefighter 1 and NFPA Driver. Progress is monitored through task book reviews and successful performance evaluations.
- Educational Support: The district supports students by covering tuition fees for approved classes toward attaining an AAS degree in Fire Science, AAS in Paramedicine, or a dual AAS degree in both Fire and Paramedicine.
Timeline:
- Spring: Applications and testing
- Summer: Conditional offers and background checks
- Fall: Commencement of student shifts
